About a month ago, I committed to capturing and sharing my life story via SnapChat. The goal was simple: I want to look back on a life well-lived, a life that people tell stories about. My experiment: by telling my story, I’ll learn how to live a good one.
I am learning that telling a story isn’t easy. Not only do I need to live well, I need to capture and share it well too.
The Main Thing
As I compare what I shared early on with more recent videos, I think I am starting to get it. I need to focus on a big thing each day. If I had a clear goal in the morning for what I want to accomplish today, I’d be able to capture that and tell you about it as my day unfolds.
Storytellers focus on the “main thing.” Interestingly enough, so do productivity and success experts.
This is a very tangible example of how telling my story will help me improve my life: rather than running in a million different directions each day and hoping to make progress in all of them, we need to pick the big things and commit to actually doing something about them.
And the Unexpected?
Leave room. Some of my best footage came when I captured things I wasn’t expecting to see. A new story unfolded that day. I’m learning to remain open to changes in direction. Focused, but flexible.
