“No.”
It doesn’t matter whether we are fourteen months, fourteen years, or even older. We hate the word “no.” We don’t want to be told it. We don’t want to tell it to people. We certainly don’t enjoy saying it to ourselves.
And that’s what I thought Budgeting was. One big fat “no.”
I didn’t learn the truth until I was faced with a crisis. My failure to budget landed me in $95,000 of debt: car loan, credit cards, student loans. When your bills are as big as your income, Budgeting is no longer optional. And that’s where I was two and a half years ago.
Budgeting isn’t “no,” it’s protection.
As we sat down to make our first budget, I was shocked to discover how much I was spending on things that didn’t really matter to me. I was stuck saying “no” to some real fun (trips, experiences with friends and family), because I was saying “yes” to fast food at lunch.
I was sacrificing things I truly wanted in my life so that I could spend on things that didn’t even matter.
I was paying the bills, but I wasn’t paying attention!
